Thoughts About First Flight
Taking our first flight with a baby and being away from home felt daunting at first.
Looking back, it turned out to be more manageable than expected, mainly because we kept things simple and stuck to our usual routine.
Travelling There
-
We kept to our normal morning routine instead of waking earlier than usual. After a quick breakfast, we booked a cab when we were ready.
In Singapore, taxis are frequent enough that advance booking isn’t necessary, and it also helps avoid additional booking fees.
Our little one travelled in a capsule car seat we brought along, which we had planned to use throughout the trip in Thailand as well, for consistency and safety.
-
After clearing departure procedures, we checked in our stroller at the gate.
It was only then that we realised we had forgotten to bring our baby carrier. In the end, we didn’t really miss it on this short trip.
-
We fed our baby during take-off, which worked well and helped keep him calm. There was no crying or visible discomfort.
About 30 minutes before boarding, I expressed milk after clearing immigration and stored it for the flight.
For short flights like this, freshly expressed breastmilk can be kept at room temperature (around 25°C) for up to four hours, which made things easier to manage.
A portable pump was used for quick expression during transit, roughly every 3 to 4 hours.
The short flight duration meant the time passed quickly, and before we knew it, we had arrived in Phuket.
Flight Takeaways
Keeping to our normal routine helped reduce stress
Feeding during take-off worked well for us
A carrier was not essential for this short flight
Gear Used in Transit
Stroller: Bugaboo
Car seat: Maxi-Cosi Capsule car seat (older model; compatible with Bugaboo adapters)
Portable pump: Imani i2Plus used for on-the-go expression
Where We Stayed
COMO Point Yamu
Location: Phuket (Yamu Peninsula, quiet and secluded)
Stay Duration: 2 nights (Bay Suite)
Travelling Party: 2 adults, 1 baby (+ grandparents at times)
👉 COMO Point Yamu is not in a walkable area—this was intentional. It’s best suited for a stay-in, slow-paced trip, rather than exploring Phuket daily.
STAYING HERE WITH A BABY
-
We used the spare toilet for washing bottles, pump parts and sterilising.
Set up a simple milk prep station beside the kettle and mini fridge (used a Ceris Chill* for milk storage as mini fridges are usually not sufficiently cold). -
Baby toiletries were provided.
The bathtub was spacious enough for our baby to comfortably play in.
-
A cot with pillows and blankets was provided.
An extra bed also doubled up as a diaper-changing area.
There was enough space in the room to wheel the stroller indoors comfortably.
-
One of the highlights of the room was the balcony overlooking Yamu Bay.
It became a quiet space to slow down, especially during nap times and early mornings.
Given the resort’s location, most of our time was spent within the hotel itself—which actually worked well for this stage of travel with a young child.
What worked well
Quiet, secluded location helped us slow down fully
Room layout was spacious enough for baby logistics
Having both sink + counter space made feeding routines easier
Balcony added a calm, reflective space in between routines
Things to note
Location is remote. There is nothing walkable nearby
This is not a base for exploring Phuket daily
Best suited for resort-focused stays rather than active itineraries
OVERALL
COMO Point Yamu worked well as a slow, grounding first stop for this trip.
It gave us space to settle into travelling with a baby without rushing between places, and set a calm tone for the days that followed.
Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas
Location: Phuket (Yamu Peninsula, Some crowd) XXX
Stay Duration: 2 nights [Pool Pavilion]
Travelling Party: 4 adults, 1 baby
Vibe: Slow, quiet, beach resort stay
👉 Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villa shares its facilities (gym, sports courts etc.) with Anantara Vacation Club, which is just next door. It’s best suited for families who like exploring different activities together within the compound.
Staying Here with a Baby
-
The room setup worked well for daily baby care.
We used the kitchen sink for washing bottles and pump parts, which made cleaning routines simple and consistent.
The hidden fridge was a nice surprise for storing milk, which we hadn’t fully expected—we had prepared to rely on a portable cooler, so this made things easier.
A kettle and counter space nearby also helped us set up a small, functional milk prep station.
-
Bathing our baby was straightforward in the bathroom sink, which worked better than the bathtub for us—it was easier to manage given the height and space.
Baby toiletries were provided, which meant we didn’t need to unpack too many essentials immediately.
Overall, the bathroom layout was simple and practical for quick daily routines.
-
The Villa came with a baby cot, which was set up before arrival along with pillows and blankets.
The room itself was spacious enough to move around comfortably, including space for a stroller indoors.
We also used parts of the room flexibly. For example, surfaces doubled up as temporary changing areas when needed.
-
One of the highlights of the room was the private pool.
